Inspiring social worker honoured for charity fundraising

An inspirational Denbighshire social worker is in line for a coveted national award for her big-hearted charity work.

Ali Alcock has made it through to the final four for the Pride of Britain Fundraiser of the Year award. Ali along with the other three finalists will feature on ITV this week on the evening news (27th sept – 30th Sept) with the successful nominee going through to the Pride of Britain Awards to be held in London on Oct 30th.

The social worker for Denbighshire County Council has been honoured for her devoted efforts that has seen thousands of pounds raised for Macmillan Cancer Support.

Ali was diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2015 and after receiving the all clear through treatment she has dedicated herself to paying back the support she received from Macmillan Cancer Support.

The Corwen fundraiser has previously taken to the skies for a sky dive challenge, had numerous charity nights, walks, auctions, brave the shaves, Macmillan coffee mornings, raffles and this year she braved a wing walking charity challenge which she dedicated to her cousin Mark Weeks who was diagnosed with a terminal brain tumour earlier in the year.

The wing walk was sponsored by Ifor Williams Trailers, who also gave a £5,000 donation.

Along with the Wing Walk for Weeksy this year Ali has also collaborated with friends and held a Miles for Macmillan Hike, Masterpieces for Macmillan Art Exhibition, Quiz Night, Fundraiser in Guys and Molls Hairdressers in Chirk, Macmillan Coffee Morning, raffles and competitions with more to come.

Ali pledged this year she was going to double her annual target of £5,000 due to Cancer striking two of her close family members, her dad Barry Jones who has thankfully had the all clear and her cousin Mark Weeks, to date she has raised over £17,000 this year with more charity work to come.

As a six-year survivor over the previous 4 years of fundraising Ali has raised £20,000 for Macmillan Cancer Support. Ali is quick to add she never does this alone and the support she receives is overwhelming from friends, family and the communities in both Corwen (and across Denbighshire) and in Chirk.

Over the last six years Ali has been a passionate ambassador for Macmillan and is well known for her fundraising work but she is also a lead volunteer and represents North Wales on the volunteer’s forum.

Ali is dedicated to Macmillan as she is fully aware of how invaluable the support and services they provide are to people living with Cancer and their families/friends/carers having had first-hand experience of these herself.

Ali said: “I am so honoured and humbled to have even been nominated let alone made the final four, especially this year as it has meant so much more to me again.”

If Ali makes it through the final four stage she will be invited to attend The Pride of Britain Awards which will be held in London on Oct 30.

Cllr Bobby Feeley, the Council’s Lead Member for Well-being and Independence, said: “I would like to say how proud we all of Ali and how inspiring she is to so many. We wish her good look for the final four process, but being nominated is a wonderful achievement.

“Ali and all of our care staff are simply fantastic, they face a lot of pressures, yet always have a ready smile and an amazing desire to simply help others.”
