Jamie Oliver’s cookery school is coming to Swansea

In partnership with Jamie Oliver, Tesco’s Community Cookery School roadshow will visit the Swansea Cadle Extra store throughout September, teaching local charities how best to use surplus food donations and stop good food going to waste.

The cookery school initiative launched earlier in the year and has been developed in partnership with food distribution charity FareShare. It offers training and advice to community groups on how to prepare nutritionally balanced meals using surplus food.

The Swansea sessions will be held in store with Chris Clyburn, former Jamie Oliver Ministry of Food chef. Customers will have the chance to sample dishes and take home recipe cards to have a go themselves.

The programme will help charities in Swansea who receive surplus donations from Tesco stores via Fareshare, under the supermarket’s Community Food Connection scheme.

The course teaches cooks everything from knife skills and nutrition, to recipes for versatile base sauces that can be adapted to compliment a wide variety of donated food. Training is free and attendees receive cooking equipment, plus a folder of Jamie’s Oliver’s recipes.

Jamie Oliver says:

“It’s brilliant to see our Community Cookery School initiative roll out across the UK – helping more people than ever cut unnecessary food waste. I’ve written recipes to arm all those amazing local community cooks with tools to create delicious, balanced food for people who need it most. It’s all about giving otherwise wasted ingredients some love, and transforming them into tasty, nutritious meals. Every dish that reduces food waste is a winner!”

Nicola McGuiness, store manager of Swansea Cadle Extra, comments:

“I’m delighted that we’ve been able to invite some really worthy groups across the area into our community kitchen. The sessions have undoubtedly been fun for those involved, but incredibly important too in helping to put food waste to good use. For those customers interested in reducing food waste at home, they can also pick up one of the recipe cards in store.”

Swansea dates for the Tesco Community Cookery School:

  • 4/5 September
  • 11/12 September
