A leading civil engineering company has set the highest of health and safety standards for a 14thconsecutive year.

Ruthin-based Jones Bros Civil Engineering UK has been awarded a 14th successive gold award from The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA).

Jones Bros has also been named among the recipients of the President’s Award, given to companies that earn gold award status for 10 or more years in a row.

The RoSPA health and safety awards are one of the most prestigious and recognised schemes in the world with almost 2,000 entries every year from 50 countries and a reach of more than seven million employees.

Winners are recognised for very low levels of error, injury, and loss, as well as impressive control of risk and highly developed occupational health and safety management systems and culture.

Mike Jolley, senior health, safety, and environment manager at Jones Bros, said: “We are thrilled to have been awarded a 14th consecutive gold award.

“Excellent health and safety performance can only be achieved with the commitment and effort of everyone at the company, not just the Health, Safety, and Environment team.”

Navigating a working environment impacted by the continuing global pandemic provided challenges of its own.

Comprehensive COVID-19 risk assessments and site rules were implemented and continually reviewed to enable all locations to implement and work to both company-wide and local precautions.

Areas assessed included travelling, hygiene and cleaning practices, physical distancing, ventilation, welfare facilities, communication, and information.

Mike continued: “There is no doubt about it that the pandemic has thrown up plenty of challenges, but to be recognised for maintaining the highest standard of health and safety during this hugely testing period is wonderful and a testament to all our workforce.”

Jones Bros now has the Order of Distinction in its sights, awarded for 15 consecutive gold awards.

“This would be a great achievement and milestone for the whole of Jones Bros, and something for us to strive for as we look to continue our impressive standards,” added Mike.

Julia Small, RoSPA’s achievements director, said: “This is a fantastic and well-deserved accomplishment. All our award entrants demonstrate their unwavering commitment and passion for keeping people safe at work.

“By receiving this recognition Jones Bros join like-minded businesses and organisations worldwide, who represent the very best in their approach to health and safety.

“I would like to add my personal thanks for all the work that it has taken to secure this well-deserved award, and congratulations to all those involved, who champion and drive-up health and safety standards every day.”

Established in the 1950s, Jones Bros owns one of the largest plant fleets in the UK and employs approximately 500 people.

The company is currently working on contracts in various sectors including highways, flood and marine defence, waste management and renewable energy around the UK.
