Around 120 children from 6 special schools competed in The Lady Taverners inter-school sports day at the National Indoor Athletics Centre in Cyncoed. Heronbridge, Meadowbank, Ty Gwyn, Riverbank, Ysgol y Deri and The Hollies competed in sports from wheelchair races, long jump, table tennis, skittles and egg and spoon races. The event finished a relay race and a lap of honour with all the children taking part. Face painting was kindly provided by Acorns Nurseries.
Glamorgan County Cricket Club and Welsh Gymnastics joined in the fun and Wales and Cardiff Blues player Josh Navidi came along to meet the children and present the cups to the winning schools.
The Lord’s Taverners provided equipment so that the children could experience Table Cricket – a specially designed version of the game which enables young people with severe physical and learning disabilities to participate in the game.
Jane John, Chair of The Lady Taverners Cardiff Capital Region, said:
“This event is so much fun every year and the children really enjoy it. We have had some fantastic feedback from the schools, and they loved meeting Josh Navidi. It gets better and better every year. Huge thanks go to all those who made it possible, including the many volunteers, Josh Navidi, Glamorgan Cricket Club, Welsh Gymnastics and Acorns Nurseries all of whom contributed to making a very successful day.
“As a charity, we aim to give disadvantaged and disabled children a sporting chance, and, as important as the fundraising events are, this event is particularly special as it enables us to cement our links with some schools we help in south Wales.”
