Children from Llandaff City C.I.W. PrimarySchool opened Llandaff Fields Play Area on Friday, where children are now welcome to explore and play after completion of a huge revamp.

Works at Llandaff Fields Play Area started in October 2021 and completed on Friday 11 February.

Cardiff Parks Department invited schools from across the city to provide their thoughts and ideas on how the play area could be developed.

Pupils from Creigiau Primary School, Kitchener Primary School, Millbank Primary School, Severn Primary School, St Cuthbert’s Primary, St David’s Primary School, St Monica’s Primary School as well as separate entries from other children submitted their drawings and ideas.

Following the children’s ideas, Cardiff council developed the central embankment into a new play feature – increasing the height and adding new rubber surfacing.

Children are also able to enjoy:

    • 3 large new slides
    • climbing nets
    • climbing ropes
    • large sphere stepping-stones
    • new benches, paths and other climbing play equipment will also be added to the space.

Cabinet Member for Culture and Leisure, Cllr Peter Bradbury said: “This is a really unique and special play area and I’m delighted to see it open well ahead of February half term for children and families to enjoy.

“We’ve worked closely with children in schools across the city to make sure our refurbishment plans meet the needs of our communities and we’re delighted to make these plans a reality.

“Children benefit so much from being able to meet outdoors and play together so this new and improved play equipment is a fantastic facility for everyone to use.”

The current play equipment in the play area will be kept and other areas of the play area will be reviewed at a later date.

The next phases of the play area will focus on fully accessible play, toddler play, music and education, and natural play.
