Runners, spectators, and well-wishers descended to Llanelli today to participate and witness the return of the hugely popular Llanelli Half Marathon and brand new 10K. Sponsored by Tata Steel and supported by a volunteer team from the Trostre site, the event was a great success and a joyous event for all.

    Tash Smith, Race Director said:

“It was fantastic to see such a wonderful turnout for the event, especially for the 10k race that allowed more to dip their toe into their first race. Being one of the first races in the calendar for the region makes this event an attractive one for most.”

One of the most experienced veteran runners who took was 79-year-old, John Deakin. John achieved 9th in his age category for the half marathon and is a run leader at Llantwit Major Milers. He said:

“I have done countless races, mainly 10k’s and Half Marathons, although I did complete the London Marathon in 2018, just before my 74th birthday. As a run leader, I spend a lot of time encouraging new and returning runners, particularly the older ones. This will be the first time that I’ve run the Llanelli Half, so I’m looking forward to it!”

The runners taking the podium completed their race in speedy quick times. In first place at the half marathon was Kadar Omar in a time of 1.05.27, falling just short of the course record, but beating the previous time of Welsh favourite Dewi Griffiths. Second place was taken by Adam Bull in a time of 1.08.54, followed by Michael Roderick who completed the 13.1 miles in 1.09.52. The ladies’ title went to Swansea Harrier, Caryl Edwards in a super quick time of 1.16.21, Steph Gibson took second place finishing in 1.24.18, closely followed by Lucy Richards in 1.24.24.

First to set the record was Lee Lad in 38.36, followed by Simon Madigan in 38.51 and third place went to Andy McCall of Amman Valley Harriers in 39.08. First place female winner was Bethan Jones of Tri Potential who crossed the line in 39.59, followed by Millie Thorne in 42.18 and one of our youngest runners, aged just 15, came third, in an impressive 43.13.

Amongst all those that ran today, was Geraint Williams, a wheelchair participant who was supported by runner Adrian Thomas. Geraint was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia, a progressive neurological condition at 28. Geraint said:

“Since my diagnosis fitness has become important to me and I find working toward challenges helps with motivation. Over the years, I have already completed the London Marathon, climbed Pen-Y-Fan and Mount climbed Kilimanjaro, all in my adapted wheelchair.”

    He added:

“Llanelli will be my first Frontrunner event, although I am signed up for the Swansea Half this year and hope to do the Welsh Marathon next year! I am already planning 2025 and hope to climb the UK three peaks and complete a marathon in Wales, England and Scotland to raise funds for Ataxia UK.”

    Running for charity

Official charities of the event included: Hywel Dda, 2wish, Shelter Cymru, Prostate Cymru and Air Wales Ambulance. So, anyone wishing to donate can do so via the charity JustGiving page.

Corporate Challengers went head-to-head with teams at Tata Steel, Actif Carmarthenshire, Castell Howell and Gravells. The winning team is yet to be announced but those taking the crown will receive a donation to the charity of their choice, thanks to organisers at Front Runner Events.

Organisers would like to thank the businesses and organisations that supported the event including Brecon Carreg to help keep runners hydrated, Gravells to lead runners to an electrifying performance, Foothold Cymru to help keep the route litter free and the countless volunteers and cadets who gave their time to make the event the great day it was!.
