Local dads build Mud Kitchen for Abergavenny school

Last week, local dads project Dads Can Cymru teamed up with a local school in Abergavenny to provide the students with a mud kitchen.

The hard working dads decided to put their skills to use during their weekly Coffee and Catch Up group in Abergavenny; identifying Deri View Primary and its forest school area as the ideal location to build a mud kitchen.

Teaming up with Monmouthshire Housing Association (MHA), who provided the wooden pallets to create the mud kitchen. The Dads were supported by members of MHA’s Building Services team who used their volunteer day to assist the dads in completing the project.

One of the building services team who volunteered their time was carpenter Greg Thomas, who used his skills to teach the volunteer dads how to use the various tools to build the kitchen.

Greg Thomas, MHA Carpenter said: “I really enjoyed working on this project with Lee and the dads. It was great to see them both get stuck in and hopefully they picked up some new skills. I’m sure the children at Deri View School will have lots of fun using the mud kitchen.”

Lee Davies, Dads Can Cymru Development Worker said: Bringing the dads together and getting them involved in a lovely little project such as this gives them that opportunity to learn some new skills, it helps them build confidence and gives them a sense of achievement. With the support of Greg who was a great support helping the dad, they happily got involved and thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Completing projects like this is definitely something Dads Can Cymru will look to continue.”

Speaking about how Dads Can Cymru has helped him, volunteer dad Shaun told us: “I like Dads Can because I don’t get much chance to socialise and by being involved I get to speak to other dads, I also get some great support and advice from Lee. Being someone who doesn’t drive I find it difficult to be able to take my son out of town to see different things so Dad Can have been great in helping arrange days out for me and my son.”

Dads Can Cymru is a Big Lottery funded project supporting fathers and father figures across Monmouthshire and Newport.
