A major incident has been declared as firefighters continue to tackle a large wildfire in the Rhondda that has spread across an estimated 150 hectares of forestry plantation and common land.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has been battling the blaze since it began on Saturday afternoon, with crews working continuously in challenging conditions across steep and difficult terrain.

The fire has affected areas of bracken, scrub and vegetation, with firefighters creating and maintaining firebreaks to contain its spread and protect nearby communities.

Although crews made good progress in reducing the size of the fire, changing wind conditions on Sunday evening led to an increase in firefighting activity and resources. Local communities have been warned they may experience smoke from the fire over the coming days.

The fire service has now declared the incident a major incident due to the scale of the response required and the increased demand on resources.

There are currently 20 fire engines at the scene, supported by two specialist wildfire teams, senior officers, a high volume pumping unit and drone capability.

Firefighters are being supported by partner agencies including Natural Resources Wales, South Wales Police, Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council and health partners, with agencies working together to monitor the situation and coordinate the response.

A rest centre has been established at Rhondda Fach Leisure Centre for residents of Blaenllechau and Ferndale.

Residents are not currently being asked to evacuate their homes, but the centre is available for anyone who does not wish to remain at home because of poor air quality caused by the fire.

The incident is expected to continue for several days, with further updates to be issued as the situation develops.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service said: “We want to reassure the public that all our crews have the support they need to deal with wildfire, and while we are grateful for community support, we don’t need any refreshments or donations at the scene.”

The service added: “We would prefer it if you avoided the incident area and stay safe. If people feel that they want to donate, we work very closely with the Firefighters Charity who support members of the community and their families with wellbeing and practical support when its needed most.”
