    A major repair scheme on a key road near Aberdare is set to resume next month, with work continuing throughout 2026.

    Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council has confirmed that works on the Afon Cynon Bridge on the A4059 near Cwmbach will restart in early April, with initial setup and investigation activity already underway.

    The bridge, which sits between the Cwmbach and Asda roundabouts and spans both the Afon Cynon and a railway line, is undergoing a significant maintenance programme. Initial works began last year, including blockstone and scour repairs, but the scheme has since been extended into 2026 due to design, safety and access challenges.

    Contractor Horan Construction Ltd began site setup at Aberaman Park Industrial Estate on March 25, with early investigatory works now in progress. The main phase of repairs is scheduled to begin from April 7.

    Residents are being advised that any work requiring road closures will take place overnight to help reduce disruption.

    Early works in April will include trial holes and site deliveries taking place overnight on April 7 and 8, which will require two-way traffic lights on the bridge. From April 9, a public right of way beneath the bridge will also be closed for the duration of the scheme to ensure safety.

    The wider programme of repairs will involve installing new bearings, carrying out concrete repairs to the abutments and ballast walls, replacing bridge deck joints, repairing a damaged parapet, undertaking masonry repairs, maintenance painting, and improvements to the footpath beneath the structure.

    Several key stages later in the year will require full overnight road closures. These include lifting the bridge to replace bearings in spring, replacing expansion joints in summer, and removing scaffolding in autumn.

    The council has said further details about traffic management and specific closure arrangements will be shared with residents once plans are finalised.
