Cardiff’s waterfront destination, Mermaid Quay, has unveiled its plans for Christmas including a number of free family-friendly events.

Alongside a full calendar of activities, the popular waterfront location in Cardiff Bay has a fantastic line-up of restaurants and bars offering special Christmas menus, ideal for sharing a meal with friends or family.

At the heart of the festive celebrations is Mrs Claus’ Kitchen, an enchanting experience for families. Here, children will be warmly welcomed by Mrs Claus herself and her cheerful elves for cosy storytelling, festive games, and activities like gingerbread decorating and letter writing to Santa. Each child will receive a candy cane gift as a keepsake. Mrs Claus’ Kitchen will open on selected Saturdays and Sundays (November 30, December 7, 14, 15, and 22) with multiple sessions throughout the day, located at Unit 13 between Pavers and Fabulous Welshcakes.

Adding some unique Christmas mischief, The Grinch will make a special appearance on Sunday, December 22, roaming the quayside between 11 am and 2 pm. Known for his humorous antics, The Grinch will provide a fun addition to the Christmas experience at Mermaid Quay.

For those looking for more festive fun, the Cardiff Bay Reindeer Trail will run from November 30, 2024, to January 5, 2025. Featuring nine beautiful wicker reindeer scattered around Cardiff Bay, the free interactive trail invites families to follow clues and unscramble letters to reveal a festive word, with a chance to win a family staycation in Cardiff Bay. Available in both English and Welsh, the trail even includes a digital reindeer that can be animated via smartphone, adding an extra element of adventure.

Mermaid Quay Centre Manager, Mark Nott, said, “We’re thrilled to offer a magical Christmas experience for families and friends to enjoy together. With Mrs Claus’ Kitchen, the Grinch, the reindeer trail, and festive dining options, it’s an opportunity to make lasting memories while celebrating the Christmas season in Cardiff Bay.”

Visitors can also look forward to delicious festive dining, with many of Mermaid Quay’s popular restaurants offering special seasonal menus, including:

    • Bill’s – Enjoy festive dishes with seasonal ingredients in a welcoming atmosphere.
    • Hub Box – Tuck into burgers with a Christmas twist alongside holiday-themed sides.
    • Cosy Club – Dine from a festive menu in a beautifully decorated setting, perfect for groups.
    • Las Iguanas – Spice up Christmas with a Latin-inspired festive feast.
    • Yakitori#1 – Experience a unique Japanese-inspired Christmas menu.
    • Signor Valentino – Enjoy Italian favourites with a seasonal flair, ideal for group gatherings.
