More than 120 primary school pupils from across Merthyr Tydfil took part in the launch of a Young Leaders programme at Merthyr Tydfil Leisure Centre on Thursday 17 September.
The programme, developed by Active Merthyr Tydfil’s Sport Development department, is designed to give pupils the knowledge, skills and experience to support sports provision in their schools. The launch included interactive workshops and guest speakers, with activities focused on practical learning, confidence and leadership.
Cllr Gareth Lewis, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “It’s fantastic to see so many young people eager to develop their leadership skills and have a positive influence in their school communities.
“The Young Leaders programme gives participants the chance to build confidence, learn important life skills, and explore what leadership in sport is all about. We’re committed to helping them reach their potential and supporting them every step of the way.”
The programme will continue over the coming year with termly visits and placements, including visits to local organisations.
Cllr Jamie Scriven, Cabinet Member for Economy, Regeneration, Leisure & Tourism, said: “We are committed to supporting these young people as they develop their skills and confidence as future leaders. Their enthusiasm and dedication are inspiring, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact they will make in their schools, communities, and beyond.”
