New Bridgend restaurant offers taste of Tokyo

Bridgend is getting its first Japanese Restaurant with newly founded ‘Gin & Sake Bar & Restaurant’set to open its doors later this summer, after a successful pop-up takeaway trial has proven a hit with residents since launching in January.

Local entrepreneurs Joan Tolentino and Steve Clarke have joined forces with the renowned Japanese Chef, husband and wife team, Fred and Mel Berganio and are taking over the old La Cocina venue on Derwen Road and adding an East Asian influence to the centre of town.

The plush new venue – which will be fully refurbished over the next few months – will serve a range of Japanese favourites including Teriyaki meat and fish, Donburi, Katsu, Yakitori, Bento boxes and, of course, the traditional Sushi options.

For those diners that want to make a night of it, or groups who just want to socialise and have a drink, a full cocktail and wine bar will be available along with special music and entertainment evenings.

Speaking after receiving the keys to the new premises, Joan was excited to announce that the bar and restaurant plans for opening are already well underway.

“We’ve been delighted with the success we’ve had with our pop-up and the warmth shown to us by local residents. It’s always been the plan to open a restaurant and venue, we just wanted to make sure the location was right – and now we have got what we want!

“We hope the new venue can be a real destination for people across South Wales for special occasions, celebrations or just for a different type of meal. Our chefs are experienced and embedded in Japanese culture, and we will always stay true to that. We will be a true taste of Tokyo, as well as offering space for socialising and entertainment.”

Gin & Sake Bar & Restaurant is expected to open its doors in the early Autumn and will be taking bookings soon via their website for a special opening night event.
