14 brand new one-bedroom flats have officially opened in Penarth, the Vale of Glamorgan Council have announced.

Each property can accommodate two people and the scheme includes dedicated parking bays and a low maintenance communal garden.

Following an assessment of local housing need, the Council identified a need for additional housing for those 55 years and over.

Nick Jones, Operational Manager, Public Housing Services said: “There are currently over 6,000 households on the waiting list for social housing in the Vale, including significant numbers of older people.

“The ageing population in the Vale will mean greater numbers of older people will need safe secure and accessible accommodation. We hope these new Council flats will provide the new tenants with a forever home.

“Aimed at those over the age of 55, the flats have been designed to accommodate the needs of older residents and will enable them to form close friendships with neighbours of a similar age.”

The rooms have been specially adapted for those with mobility issues including a lift to all floors, storage facilities, widened hallways and wet rooms in each property.

There are a total of three floors, with each apartment having a bedroom, a kitchen and lounge area, and a wet room.

Leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council, Lis Burnett said: “We were really impressed with the newly completed flats. They are finished to the highest standard and they have been specially designed for those with mobility issues.

“They have beautiful views over the playing fields and surrounding countryside, and we are sure the residents will be welcomed by the nearby community.

Properties like this which offer a warm and secure environment are in high demand. We hope everyone moving in over the coming weeks are really happy and comfortable in their brand-new, purpose-built homes.”

The flats are situated in front of St Cyres Court next to the sports grounds and St Cyres secondary school.
