New lease of life for Swansea high street shops

Substantial progress has been made on bringing a row of former commercial premises on High Street back into use.

Swansea Council is renovating the properties and residents and community groups have been asked for their suggestions on how they will be used.

The countdown to opening is now on and plans include a community café and space for pop-up businesses as well as leisure activities.

Charities and other third sector organisations also want to make use of the facilities along with council services.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Supporting Communities Alyson Pugh (pictured) visited the site this week to check on progress.

She said: “The transformation is absolutely amazing and I know there are many who can’t wait to see these buildings open and to start making use of them.

“We are going to have a fantastic social café with a fabulous outside area and there are many other projects who want to be part of this.

“The units are ideal as a safe space for outreach work and youth engagement as well as employability training and support.

“What is important to us is it is up to the community what goes here and how they are used.

“It’s going to grow naturally and the council will do all it can to support their plans and ideas.

“I’m just so excited about the potential and very proud to be part of this partnership working.”
