Newport City Council has reported strong progress on its major programme to improve roads across the city, with more than twenty key routes resurfaced over the last few months.
The work is part of a wider plan to invest in Newport’s most important roads and respond to concerns raised by residents and local councillors.
“I’m delighted that we have been able to make such good progress on this in such a quick space of time,” said Councillor Rhian Howells, cabinet member for infrastructure and assets.
“This investment into our city is going to make a real difference for our residents day to day. We’ve heard their concerns, and the concerns of local members, about roads across Newport, and we are acting on those and sorting things out.
“Getting this programme in place was a priority for us. We’ve been very clear that we want to deliver more on those bread and butter services like road resurfacing, and we are doing exactly that.”
The council is investing £6.6 million into the city’s most critical roads through a programme that runs in two parts. Some routes are receiving full resurfacing, while others are being treated to preserve the road surface and extend its life.
The following roads have now been fully resurfaced:
- Stow Hill
- Clifton Road
- Coast Road
- Rodney Road
- St Mellons Road
- Newport Bridge
- Rivermead Way
- Docks Way
- A468 Caerphilly Road
- Chepstow Road and Magor Road junction
- Caerleon Road near St Julian’s Pub
- Chapel Road
- Heidenheim Drive at the Sainsbury’s junction
- A48 Cardiff Road at Pound Hill
- B4237 The Coldra
- Whitebrook and Gilfach Lane
- Highfield Road
- B4597 Caerleon Road
Surface treatment work has also been completed on the A48 Cardiff Road, A48 Chepstow Road and B4237 Cardiff Road.
Newport City Council said the programme will continue as it works through remaining high priority roads across the city.
