This summer children aged 4-11 can visit Newport Libraries and get involved in a science and innovation themed Summer Reading Challenge.

The theme for this year’s challenge is Gadgeteers and by taking part in the challenge children will be able to use their curiosity and wonder to understand the science behind a whole range of interests, from fashion and technology to cooking and music.

The challenge asks for children aged 4 to 11 to borrow and read any six library books over the summer.  The gadgeteers will feature amazing books and plenty of ideas for cool experiments and activities to discover the science all around us.

Councillor Debbie Harvey, cabinet member for community wellbeing, said: “We know that reading for pleasure is important for children’s development, so we want to encourage families to read and have fun together throughout the summer. There will also be rewards available for reading and reviewing books.”

Author visits and craft sessions will also be taking place in libraries across the city. Booking is required and further information can be found on the council’s website.

The summer reading challenge begins on 9 July and ends on 17 September, it is completely free to enter all you need is a library membership (which is also free!)

Contact your local library to find out how to take part.
