Newport to mark VE Day with special events

Credit: Newport Council
This year marks 80 years since VE Day, when the Second World War came to an end in Europe.
To mark this significant anniversary, Newport will be hosting events on Thursday 8 May – starting with the raising of the unique VE Day flag outside the civic centre, and culminating with the lighting of the VE Day beacon at Queen Elizabeth Field, Ringland.

The beacon event will start at 7.30pm where former West End star, international opera singer, and presenter, Anthony Stuart-Lloyd, will compere the evening.

Joining Anthony there will be musical entertainment from Gwent Music Community Celtic Group, Gwent Music Brass Ensemble and the City of Newport Male Choir.

The beacon will then be lit at around 9.30pm, followed by the lighting of the Lamp Light of Peace.

The site of the Queen Elizabeth II field is a perfect vantage point to look across the Bristol channel and see the other beacons of light glowing from a distance.

Newport will be part of over one thousand beacons and hundreds of Lamp Lights of Peace that will shine throughout the United Kingdom, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man, with the flames from them both, representing the ‘light of peace’ following the darkness of war.
