nextbike encourages Cardiff to ‘Opt Outside’ this January

Leading bike share firm nextbike is encouraging its customers to get moving and ‘Opt Outside’ as a way of keeping healthy and active during the winter months.

nextbike’s #OptOutside campaign is an initiative to get Cardiff’s residents reaping the benefits of spending time in the great outdoors and incorporating activity into their daily lives.

To encourage customers to embrace the cooler temperatures, nextbike is offering discounted annual memberships for just £40 until March 21.

MD of nextbike UK, Krysia Solheim, said she truly believes that cycling can be an all-weather activity.

“Although the weather is colder, there’s no hiding the huge health benefits that cycling can offer our customers,” she said. “So many people want to improve their health and fitness, especially in January after overindulging at Christmas, but many can’t afford the gym budget and that’s where nextbike comes in.

“We had record-breaking rentals in every UK scheme this autumn, and we hope that trend will continue throughout the winter as people start to focus on their health and wellbeing.”

Last year’s figures have shown that an impressive 48,000 rentals were clocked up across the UK in the winter months, with over 77 km travelled. The Cardiff scheme, which launched in March with just 50 bikes has been record-breaking, with over 25,000 rides clocked up in September alone – a usually sluggish month according to bosses.

nextbike plans to continue expanding its network of schemes this year, with launches planned in the West Midlands and Portsmouth, as well as expanding its current fleets and introducing electric bikes into selected cities, starting in Glasgow.

To encourage people in Cardiff to carry on cycling, nextbike has also compiled a set of six top tips to ensure people make the most of the great outdoors this winter.

1. Wear thin layers
Thin layers will regulate your body temperature better and they’re easier to lose if you’re working up a sweat!

2. Go with a friend
Cycling is an excellent group activity so why not call your friends and go for a ride together? This will not only keep you motivated but allow you to catch up with those people you might not see that much.

3. Be prepared for all weather
In the UK, the weather can be unpredictable so it’s good to be prepared. Gloves and a hat are perfect for keeping the cold out and proper footwear is essential to ensure you can get the most out of your ride.

4. Take some time to enjoy nature
Even when it’s cold, there are still things to see. Unleash your inner photographer and capture it all, or just ride through your local park and relax.

5. Be seen
If you’re riding in the dark, it’s essential to wear reflective gear so you are seen by others. Armbands and jackets are a great way to make sure you and others around you are safe on the roads.

6. Embrace the winter
Take the winter weather – and everything it brings – in your stride. Be prepared to get mucky, be prepared to get cold and just have fun with it!
