A Denbighshire bar owner has purchased a second site after securing a five-figure finance package from HSBC UK, expanding his business portfolio with a new gin bar.

The Barrow in St Asaph offers over 80 different types of gin as well as a variety of lagers, beers, ciders, traditional welsh spirits and organic wines which are low in sulphates. Its new owners, Alun Jones and partner Mannon Thomas, used funding from HSBC UK to purchase and renovate the historic former Alms Houses building, which was built in 1686.

Alun, who also owns The Mason’s Arms in Denbigh, aspired to expand his portfolio with a specialist gin bar that served quality spirits distilled locally, such as the Pant y Foel from Saron, Denbigh, Four Feathers from Rhuallt, and Cariad Gin from Lixwm. Under its new ownership, the business has also created four new jobs which should increase now that bookings are being taken for functions including Christenings and weddings.

Alun Jones, co-owner of The Barrow, said:

“With one established bar under my belt, we were excited at the prospect of opening a second bar which specialises in the country’s best gins, spirits and organic wines, giving locals a nice place to unwind with a great selection of quality drinks. Our HSBC UK Relationship Manager, Hitesh Mistry, has been extremely helpful and ensured the entire process was smooth.”

Martin Lyons, HSBC UK’s Business Banking Area Director for North Wales, said:

“Alun has always been very passionate about gin and has worked hard to grow his portfolio so we’re delighted to have supported him purchase and set up The Barrow. It’s great to see him fulfil his ambition as a business owner and we look forward to seeing the gin bar flourish.”
