Swansea Council is set to commit almost £250,000 to fund a floodlit all-weather sports pitch in Pontarddulais.

It will replace the former tennis courts at the town’s comprehensive with pupils using the new facility during the day and it being made available to the wider community in the evenings and at weekends.

A report going to the council’s cabinet next week says it would be a big boost to school and grass-roots sport in Pontarddulais with a lasting legacy for many years to come as there are no similar facilities in the town.

Cabinet members are being asked to approve the addition of £249,500 to this year’s capital programme including a contribution of £45,000 from the council’s new launched Play Fund and £4,500 from the ward members’ Community Budget.

The former tennis courts within the school grounds that have fallen into disrepair and would be replaced by a 2G flood-lit pitch and a multi-use games area.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education Improvement, Learning and Skills, Robert Smith, said: “Swansea Council is investing heavily in improving all-weather sports facilities across the city.

“We have delivered new pitches at Morriston, Pentrehafod and Penyrheol. Additional facilities are being provided as part of the current improvements taking place at Ysgol Gyfun Gwyr and we are also working to support additional all-weather sports facilities at Cefn Hengoed, Dylan Thomas, Olchfa and next to YG Bryntawe.”

It is anticipated work on the new facilities at Pontarddulais will get underway in the autumn.
