Significant progress is being made across a number of exciting developments that will help transform Caerphilly Town Centre over the coming years.
Caerphilly county borough council is working closely with Welsh Government and a range of other partners to deliver an ambitious multi-million pound blueprint for the town called the Caerphilly 2035 Place Making Programme.
Plans to develop a new £30 million transport hub in the heart of the town, along with CADW’s investment of £5 million in development works at Caerphilly Castle are both projects that are advancing at pace.
The public transport interchange project has recently advanced into the consultation stage of delivery. The public have been given the opportunity to share views on the proposed project. These views will be used to cultivate a proposal that will fit the needs of the community.
Cllr Sean Morgan, the Leader of Caerphilly County Borough Council commented on the positive progress that has been made in recent months:
“Back in January, Caerphilly council unveiled an exciting blueprint for the future transformation of Caerphilly town centre and the surrounding area. Just six months on, I am delighted with the progress that we have made to progress these plans. The transport interchange will be an essential strategic hub that will connect the town centre with the transport infrastructure necessary to establish Caerphilly as a top tourist attraction.”
“Furthering this, we have also just launched a number of ambitious ‘levelling up’ bids totalling £80 million which if successful will help to regenerate the wider County Borough.”
“It is clear that the future of Caerphilly town centre and the wider County Borough is bright and we are making strides towards achieving our Caerphilly 2035 blueprint.”
With the support from the Welsh Governments Transforming Towns Programme – progress continues to be made to assess the feasibility of a number of other plans to develop:
- A major £15 million mixed retail and residential development at Pentrebane Street, with the council currently looking at options to relocate traders from the existing indoor market
- Creation of a new ‘Boutique’ hotel development at Park Lane
- Plans to create an ambitious new Leisure Quarter offering new leisure, retail, commercial and business opportunities in the town centre.
There has been other positive news for the town with the official opening of the new Brew Monster brewery. The former Plumbsave unit in Lon Y Twyn has been successfully renovated and marks the first completed project as part of the Caerphilly 2035 programme.
Cllr. Jamie Pritchard, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Prosperity, Regeneration & Climate Change said:
“The Caerphilly 2035 programme is about taking Caerphilly town centre forward. Not about settling for what we have right now. We want Caerphilly to become a renowned destination for both the people of the county borough and for those wishing to utilise the town. The work that has been undertaken over recent months has begun our journey towards achieving this.
“The opening of the Brew Monster brewery is the first of many complete projects for the local area and I’m sure that local people are already enjoying the new venue.”
“The progress being made on the Transport Interchange project and the ongoing redevelopment work at Caerphilly Castle to include a new welcome centre with reception, café and cloakroom facilities; outside seating areas; improved display and interpretation of the historic asset; an enhanced retail provision and ticket office; and a refurbished Great Hall, have been passed. We’re exploring options for a new market, more events in the town, and many more ideas are being considered”.
Further information about the developments within the Caerphilly 2035 blueprint will continue to be announced by Caerphilly County Borough Council over the coming months as the different aspects of the plan progress.
