Parents in the Caerphilly county borough could soon get the chance to have their say on proposals to create a new Welsh secondary school in the area.
Demand for Welsh medium education continues to grow and pupil numbers are increasing, but there is only one Welsh secondary school in the Caerphilly county borough at present.
As a result, the council has developed proposals to address this growing demand by expanding the provision of Welsh medium education within the area. This forms part the council’s wider commitment to Welsh medium provision across the whole county borough.
Next week the council’s Education and Social Services Scrutiny Committee will discuss a report which proposes the creation of a new Welsh secondary school on the Y Gwyndy site in Caerphilly from September 2027.
The Y Gwyndy campus is currently used as a satellite of Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, but this split-site arrangement presents a number of operational and organisational challenges. The proposal is to discontinue this arrangement and create a separate new school at the site instead.
Following the Scrutiny Committee, the council’s Cabinet will then be asked to proceed to a public consultation at its meeting on 23 September.
“The proposal to two create two separate secondary schools is the most viable and sustainable solution, delivering financial stability while protecting educational standards, maintaining curriculum breadth and minimising disruption to pupils, staff and the wider community,” said Cllr Carol Andrews, Cabinet Member for Education.
“It is important that parents get the chance to have their say, so if the proposals are agreed by Cabinet, there would be a 6 week consultation to ensure we gather all relevant feedback before any final decision is made,” she added.
