Wales and British Lions rugby star George North took a break from his busy Six Nations schedule to congratulate Rhondda-based Police Youth Volunteers this week.

The in-form North accepted an invitation to present awards at this year’s High Sheriff of Mid Glamorgan Youth Community Awards which took place at Pencoed College on Wednesday, 13 March, 2019.

Three youth volunteers attended the event on behalf of 15 members who belong to the Rhondda branch.

The volunteers were recognised for their work in the community, and have been given £1000 which they must now put towards community causes.

They have taken part in a diverse range of projects, from community clear-ups to school visits and awareness days – they have even supported real policing operations.

Volunteer co-ordinator Chief Inspector Jason Rees, said: “This recognition for our hard working volunteers is very welcome.

“It takes an exceptional young person to give up their time for the benefit of others – every one of these volunteers are dedicated to their role.

“I’d like to thank High Sheriff Jon Wall for showing his appreciation and assure him that this generous donation will benefit the community of Rhondda,” he added.

The event was attended by the new policing commander for the region, Chief Superintendent Dorian Lloyd, and also Deputy Chief Constable Richard Lewis.

Dorian said: “It’s a great event recognising young people who give their time, effort and energy to support others less fortunate than themselves. Congratulations to all the volunteers I am very proud of them.”

The Rhondda police youth volunteers scheme was launched in 2016 – there are also branches in Taff, Cynon, Merthyr Tydfil and across South Wales.
