Pontypool Locals to Walk for Life for Kidney Wales this weekend

Wales’ leading kidney research charity, Kidney Wales, invites locals to join them this May for their Walk for Life event taking place in Pontypool on the 20thof May.

The annual walk will start at 11am and will begin at the town’s picturesque canal basin, before heading towards the pub in Mamhilad, and eventually returning to Pontypool town centre in the afternoon.

Since its beginning, the popularity of the walk has grown year-on-year, with between sixty and seventy people anticipated to attend this year. The child-friendly event will also have a mascot, balloons and treats for attendees.

On many occasions, the event has also been supported by the hardworking local nurses that selflessly help those people that have received care for the effects of kidney disease.

Over 30 years old, the Walk for Life is one of Kidney Wales’ longest running events and is a key element of the charity’s strategy for raising vital funds to improve the lives of patients and families living with kidney disease.

The Pontypool walk will be led by Annette Woolfall, who has participated in the walk for the past six years.

Annette was inspired to participate in the Walk for Life after seeing first-hand the impact that kidney disease has had on the life of her husband, who has had to battle the effects of diabetes since the age of eight, with the disease severely impairing both his eyesight and kidney functions.

Since then, she has gone on to participate in numerous fundraising activities for the charity, helping the Walk for Life to become an important event in the Pontypool calendar each year.

Kidney Wales Director, Nic Clarke, said:

“We’d like to thank all those taking part in the Walk for Life in Pontypool. These annual events, held nationwide across Wales by dedicated local supporters, help us raise awareness of kidney diseases and the work our charity does throughout the year to improve the lives of kidney patients and their families, by improving the standard of care and life-saving treatments right here in Wales.

“We are a Welsh charity and every penny that is raised through our Walk for Life events will go towards helping kidney patients right here in Wales.”
