Drivers are being urged to take care this morning as strong winds and unsettled weather are affecting many areas of Wales. The Met Office has issued a yellow warning for wind from 20:00 on Sunday 14 September until 18:00 on Monday 15 September. Wind gusts are expected to reach 45-55 mph inland, and up to 60-70 mph in exposed coastal and hilly zones.

Rush-hour traffic is likely to be especially difficult: bridges and exposed routes are under strain, and several closures and restrictions are already in force. If you’re travelling this morning, especially on major trunk roads or over bridges, allow extra time, check conditions, and avoid high-sided or vulnerable vehicles where advised.

    Key traffic alerts

Here are some of the main Travel Wales traffic alerts at present:

    Route What’s happening Effect
A477 (Cleddau Bridge) Closed to high-sided vehicles due to high winds. Heavy vehicles must find alternate route.
M48 (J1 Aust to J2 Newhouse, Severn Bridge) Bridge closed in both directions due to high winds. East-west traffic must reroute.
A55 Britannia Bridge High winds advisory restrictions: motorcycles and caravans not allowed. Open for other traffic. Vulnerable/light-exposed vehicles affected.
M4 (Cardiff area & along South Wales) Poor driving conditions between J30 Cardiff Gate to J49 Pont Abraham; congestion also reported around Magor (westbound) and between Tredegar Park and Rogiet (eastbound). Delays likely.
A4232 (Northbound, A48 Interchange to M4 J33 Capel Llanilltern) Congestion with delays possible. Rush-hour delays expected.

    What you should expect

With the yellow warning in force:

    • Delays across road, rail, air, and ferry travel are likely.

    • Coastal routes, sea fronts and coastal communities may see spray or large waves.

    • Bus and train services may be disrupted, with journeys taking longer.

    • Short-term power outages and loss of service possible.

    • High-sided vehicles face danger on exposed bridges and routes.

What to do to stay safe

Here are some tips if you’re travelling:

    1. Check Traffic Wales website and social media (Twitter/X, Facebook) before you set off.

    2. Avoid travelling in exposed areas where possible, especially over bridges.

    3. Slow down, keep both hands on the wheel, watch for debris.

    4. If you have a high-sided vehicle, caravan, motorcycle or are towing, consider delaying your journey.

    5. Carry essential items in case of disruption: phone charger, warm clothing, water.

Strong west or south-westerly winds will start over coastal parts during Sunday evening and spread inland through Monday morning. The worst may be felt along coasts and hills. Wind speeds are expected to ease from the west later in the afternoon and into the evening. Met Office+1

If you are driving this morning in or near congested or exposed areas, leave earlier than usual. Keep up-to-date with Traffic Wales and the Met Office for any changes. Stay safe.
