Bridgend County Borough Council has confirmed that the all-new Porthcawl Metrolink opened its doors yesterday (Monday 18 November 2024).

Located on land at the heart of the regeneration area alongside the Portway and Salt Lake, the new Metrolink forms part of the wider Metro Plus programme, which seeks to improve public transport links across south-east Wales.

It will be used by all bus services currently operating within Porthcawl, including:

    • The First Cymru X2 service between Porthcawl, Bridgend and Cardiff (Monday to Sunday).
    • The First Cymru 63 service between Bridgend and Porthcawl (Monday to Sunday).
    • The Peyton Travel 861 service to Danygraig (Monday to Friday).
    • The Stagecoach In South Wales 172 service from Porthcawl to Aberdare (Sundays only).

Buses will also continue to operate via John Street except for the X2 service and the 63 service’s outbound journey to Bridgend.

Able to accommodate up to four buses at a time, the new Metrolink features a covered shelter and station building, space for a kiosk, outdoor seating areas, an environmentally friendly ‘green’ roof, a rain garden and more.

The new facility has been constructed using money from the Cardiff Capital Region city deal and UK Government as well as the council’s own Porthcawl Regeneration budget, and is designed to form an important part of the town’s ongoing regeneration scheme.

As one of our largest towns, Porthcawl needs a modern transport interchange capable of benefitting residents and visitors alike.

This new Metrolink facility is set to offer fast, efficient access both into and out of the town, and has been designed so that it will fit seamlessly into our ongoing regeneration plans for the Porthcawl waterfront area.

An official opening will be held later in the year, but I am delighted that in the meantime, services will be able to start using the new Metrolink from Monday 18 November.
