Preferred bidder emerges for new Porthcawl foodstore

The Cabinet of Bridgend County Borough Council will receive a report next week on the outcome of a bidding process which aims to deliver a high-quality new foodstore for Porthcawl.

A total of five bids were received for the new store, which is set to be developed at a two-acre site located within the Salt Lake area and known locally as The Green.

The report confirms that following a robust selection process in which each bid was carefully assessed against a planning development brief, Aldi Stores Ltd has been identified as the preferred bidder.

When they meet on Tuesday 19 January, Cabinet members will be asked to approve the disposal of the site to Aldi Stores Ltd, and to delegate authority to officers to approve the terms of the disposal agreement.

The planning development brief required bidders to submit high-quality, bespoke designs for premises that could act as ‘gateway buildings’ as well incorporating appropriate access and active travel arrangements.

If approved, the foodstore will be constructed alongside all-new residential, leisure, retail and commercial developments at Salt Lake as well as fresh green open space, new car parking, active travel facilities and more.

As well as providing residents with greater choice and more flexibility, the development is intended to unlock funds that will be reinvested into local infrastructure improvements within Porthcawl and further stages of the regeneration plans.

The Cabinet meeting will take place at 2.30pm on Tuesday 19 January 2021.
