Residents and businesses are being invited to find out more about plans for a new active travel bridge linking Llanfoist and Abergavenny at a public drop in event next week.
The session will take place on Thursday 16 July between 11am and 1pm at the Balfour Beatty site on Merthyr Road, Llanfoist.
Hosted by the Balfour Beatty project team, the event will give people the opportunity to ask questions, learn more about the scheme and discuss what the project could mean for the local community.
The team is encouraging anyone who lives nearby, travels through the area, uses the meadows, runs a local business or simply wants to know more about the project to attend.
Those unable to attend can also submit questions by emailing [email protected].
The scheme is being developed by Monmouthshire County Council and funded by the Welsh Government as part of the council’s Active Travel Strategy, which focuses on making walking, wheeling and cycling the natural choice for local journeys of three miles or less.
The proposed bridge forms part of Active Travel Network Map route MCC-A01A and aims to improve connections between Llanfoist and Abergavenny.
The existing Usk Bridge on Merthyr Road has long been identified as a barrier for people walking, wheeling and cycling. As the historic bridge is a listed structure, significant alterations are not possible.
Monmouthshire County Council has secured £10.4 million from the Welsh Government’s Active Travel Fund to deliver the project, which includes the construction of the bridge and new connecting routes.
Construction is expected to begin in 2026, with phased works continuing into 2028. The timetable will be influenced by river levels and ecological restrictions.
The project will include an accessible pedestrian and cycling bridge across the River Usk, featuring a steel framed structure with a U shaped cross section, supported by ramps on both riverbanks and a central pier.
Other elements include new ramped paths linking the bridge to Merthyr Road and Castle Meadows, bilingual wayfinding signage, improved connections to Llanfoist and Abergavenny, and a programme of social value activities.
Further information about the project is available at the Abergavenny Active Travel Bridge website.
