Welsh Strictly Come Dancing pro Amy Dowden is calling on her fellow countrymen to join together to find out How Welsh Are You Anyway? in a quiz for a leading end of life care charity.

Amy, the only British female professional on the hit BBC show, had recorded a special themed quiz for Marie Curie, to help the charity and its supporters mark St David’s Day on March 1.

The quiz was developed as part of the organisation’s Great Daffodil Appeal – its largest annual fundraiser – which has been hit with challenges due to ongoing lockdown restrictions.

Ordinarily, thousands of volunteers would sign up to collect in supermarkets across the country, giving out iconic daffodil pins in exchange for donations – which help provide care and support to dying people and their loved ones.

It’s the second year the flagship fundraiser has been hit by Coronavirus, with many collections cancelled last year as the impact of the virus became clearer.

Sara Bass, fundraising manager for Marie Curie in Wales, said: “As a team, we had to get our thinking caps on to figure out a way in which we could still support the people of Wales to celebrate St David’s Day with our daffodil pins, while also keeping them safe from coronavirus.

“Our live Marie Curie quizzes last spring and at Christmas were such a success, we wanted to try to reproduce the fun people had with those – but give them an opportunity to be able to do the quiz at a time which suited them – though we’d love as many people as possible to be playing it on St David’s Day itself.

“We think this quiz will be a perfect opportunity for workplaces, schools, rotary groups and any other organisation to join together virtually to take part and discover what their knowledge of Wales is like – and perhaps learn a thing or two along the way!”

Amy, who was partnered with JJ Chalmers in the latest series of Strictly, said: “It was an absolute privilege to be able to host this quiz for Marie Curie, and I had such fun recording the questions – but you might have to excuse some of my Welsh pronunciations!

“I learnt a thing or two as well, and I hope you will too.  This Dydd Gwyl Dewi, make sure you sign up and donate to discover – How Welsh Are You Anyway? for Marie Curie Cymru.”

Marie Curie is the UK’s leading end of life charity, providing care and support to people on all aspects of death, dying and bereavement.

To sign up to the quiz, email [email protected] and the team will tell you how you can donate and send you a fundraising pack complete with Welsh recipes and other fun activities.
