As someone who has never experienced a show like this before, I was mesmerised by how the contemporary musical styles elevated the storytelling, creating a fresh, engaging way to portray historical events. Not only does this set the show apart from others, but it keeps you hooked and entertained throughout, breathing life into history in a way I’ve never seen before. The music acts as the undercurrent of the performance, often subtle yet always captivating, driving the story forward seamlessly from one scene to the next.
Hamilton tells the story of Alexander Hamilton, one of America’s Founding Fathers, through a modern lens. Based on Ron Chernow’s biography, the musical chronicles Hamilton’s rise from an immigrant orphan to the first U.S. Treasury Secretary. Key moments in his life—his relationships with Eliza Schuyler and Angelica, his rivalry with Aaron Burr, and his ultimate downfall in a duel—are brought to life with emotional depth and contemporary relevance. This historical narrative, which underscores the foundations of the American political system, is a testament to Lin-Manuel Miranda’s genius and the collective brilliance of everyone involved in this production. To take such a pivotal chapter in history and turn it into a theatre phenomenon is an incredible feat.
The cast is uniformly stellar, but a few standouts deserve special mention. Shaq Taylor delivers an electrifying performance as Alexander Hamilton, capturing both his determination and vulnerability. Billy Nevers’ portrayal of Thomas Jefferson is truly phenomenal, exuding charisma and energy. KM Drew Boateng’s Hercules Mulligan is equally incredible, showcasing the actor’s dynamic presence and skill. The ensemble—particularly Honey Joseph and Kyerron Dixon-Bassey—are spot on, embodying multiple roles with seamless transitions and powerful performances. Their combined talent brings an extraordinary vibrancy to the show.
The music and lyrics are the beating heart of Hamilton. Tracks like “Alexander Hamilton,” “My Shot,” and “The Room Where It Happens” are pulsating showstoppers, brimming with defiance and ambition. King George III’s “You’ll Be Back,” performed hilariously by Daniel Boys, provides comic relief that fits perfectly into the narrative.
Other standout numbers include “A Winter’s Ball,” “Satisfied,” “Stay Alive,” and the cabinet battles, which resemble rap battles and inject a fun, engaging way to depict pivotal moments in history. My daughter’s favourite, “The Schuyler Sisters,” is a joyful highlight, while the turning points of “The Adams Administration” and “The Reynolds Pamphlet” showcase the devastating consequences of Hamilton’s actions. The staging and choreography are equally exceptional. The minimalist set design allows the performers and story to take centre stage, with a revolving stage enhancing the dynamism of battles and transitions. The lighting design is striking, using shadows and colours to evoke both intimacy and grandeur. Costumes blend period authenticity with a modern flair, reinforcing the musical’s theme of bridging old and new.
Beyond its technical brilliance, Hamilton makes a powerful cultural statement. The diverse casting reimagines America’s founding story as one that belongs to everyone, challenging tradition and sparking conversations about history, race, and representation. It’s a celebration of resilience, creativity, and the enduring power of storytelling.
