Newport City Council and Rodney Parade have partnered so that more waste at the stadium can be recycled, with the council’s trade waste team now providing recycling and waste services at the venue.
Supporters, staff and visitors will be able to use segregated bins around the ground for cardboard and paper, plastic and cans, food, and non-recyclable waste.
The council says food waste will be turned into fertiliser, and non-recyclable waste will be used to generate energy rather than sent to landfill.
Grass cuttings from the pitch will also be collected and turned into compost, which will be returned to Rodney Parade at the end of each season, with opportunities to raise money for local charities through fundraising initiatives.
Concha Morales, recycling project manager at Newport City Council, said: “We’re thrilled to have Rodney Parade on board with us.
“Newport is already in the top five areas in Wales and the UK for recycling, and we’re proud to be partnering up with the team at Rodney Parade to continue to increase our recycling rates.”
Jon Raymond, head of stadium operations at Dragons RFC, said: “This partnership with Newport City Council marks an exciting step forward in our commitment to sustainability.
“Together, we’re setting a positive example by improving recycling, reducing waste, and demonstrating how sport and local government can work hand in hand to make a real difference.
