A magnificent former industrial South Wales Valleys church dating back 170 years is for sale at auction.

The former Beulah Baptist Church, on Victoria Street, once served a thriving and growing congregation in the former heavy industrial village of Dowlais, near the town of Merthyr Tydfil.

Dating back to its initial foundation in 1856, the impressive property which was enlarged in 1869 to its current size, is listed for sale with a guide price of £48,000.

James Hollingsworth, of Newport-based Paul Fosh Auctions who are selling the church, said the closed down but still fully fitted 170-year-old property presents an exceptional opportunity for an entrepreneur or investor.

James said: “Subject to obtaining planning consent the former church, which retains most of its original features including its highly prized decorative intricate, plaster work ceilings, stained glass windows, solid wooden pews and majestic organ, could make an ideal redevelopment project.

“Located in the historic community of Dowlais and close to the recently completed A 465 Heads of the Valley arterial road, the church offers an abundance of character and heritage with enormous potential for a whole range of future uses, subject to planning.

“The spacious main hall features a traditional gallery with tiered seating and excellent natural light, creating a grand and atmospheric space ideal for conversion, community use, or redevelopment. The church also offers a separate worship room, kitchen, WC and staircase leading to ladies & Gents WC.

“The village benefits from a good range of amenities and shops and is also ideal for access for Merthyr Tydfil town centre and further afield using the Heads of the Valleys A465.

“This former church truly is an exceptional opportunity.”

The next Paul Fosh Auctions sale, when this church along with some ninety other properties will be on offer, starts at 12 noon on Tuesday, December 16 and ends from 5pm on Thursday, December 18
