Wales is set to enjoy its warmest weather of the year so far this weekend, with temperatures expected to climb towards 30°C as Father’s Day celebrations take place across the country.
According to the Met Office, a spell of increasingly settled weather will develop over the coming days, bringing sunshine, very warm conditions and the potential for heatwave thresholds to be reached in parts of south Wales.
Temperatures are forecast to reach the high 20s Celsius across much of Wales over the weekend, with some areas of south Wales potentially hitting 30°C on Sunday. Forecasters say temperatures could rise even higher on Monday.
The warm spell follows a mixed end to the working week, with cloudy skies, patchy rain and the chance of heavy downpours in some areas before conditions improve.
Today will start bright for some parts of Wales, although cloud is expected to spread northwards through the day. Patchy rain may affect southern hills, while heavier showers could develop further north and west. Temperatures are expected to reach around 23°C.
Cloudy and muggy conditions are forecast overnight, with hill fog and patches of light rain or drizzle on higher ground. Temperatures will remain mild, with lows of around 13°C.
Friday will begin cloudy once again, although brighter spells are expected to develop later in eastern areas. Temperatures will again reach around 23°C, with some light rain possible along western coasts.
However, the weekend outlook is far more promising.
The Met Office says high pressure will begin building from the south, bringing increasingly settled weather from Saturday through to Monday. Sunny spells are expected to become more widespread, with temperatures climbing well above the June average.
The warm and dry conditions are likely to be welcome news for families planning Father’s Day outings on Sunday, with parks, beaches, beer gardens and tourist attractions expected to be busy as people make the most of the sunshine.
While many will welcome the heat, health experts advise people to stay hydrated, wear sunscreen and take extra care when spending extended periods outdoors, particularly during the hottest part of the day.
If temperatures reach 30°C on Sunday, it would make it one of the hottest Father’s Days Wales has experienced in recent years.
