US fried chicken restaurant Popeyes® is opening the doors to its first restaurant in Wales next month, following the success of a string of new openings across the UK including Reading, Cambridge and Oxford.

The restaurant will officially open its doors in Cardiff at 11am Thursday 23rd March. Popeyes will be found on Saint John Street, next to the city’s iconic castle. Fried chicken fans are advised to come along early, as queues for the famed chicken-restaurant are expected from the early hours. Early queuers will even have the chance to win a year’s supply of Popeyes’® legendary Chicken Sandwich, awarded to the first three people in the queue on opening day (Thursday 23rd March 2023).

Popeyes will open its Cardiff restaurant in March

To celebrate the launch in Cardiff Popeyes® UK will be pulling out all the stops to showcase its Southern hospitality. Mardi Gras-style band, The Brass Funkeys, will bring the sound of New Orleans to the city as the first customers walk through the door. The first 25 customers on opening days will receive a free Chicken Sandwich and exclusive Popeyes® merch.

Chicken fans in Cardiff will be able to experience Popeyes® world famous ‘shatter crunch’ for themselves once they get their hands on the mouth-watering menu, including the iconic Popeyes® Chicken Sandwich which contains the brand’s 12-hour marinated chicken, and original Southern biscuits and gravy.

Tom Crowley, CEO at Popeyes® UK commented: “When we landed in the UK in November 2021, we asked people all over the UK to ‘believe the hype’ attached to the huge cult following Popeyes®  already has in the US. It’s safe to say they’ve done that, with overnight queues for all of our openings last year. There’s no doubt that Popeyes® has been enthusiastically received on UK shores.

“After a successful first 12 months of the brand in the UK, expanding into Wales was an obvious choice for us. Our first Welsh restaurant opens in Cardiff just a stone’s throw from the castle and a short walk from the iconic Principality Stadium. We can’t wait to bring our iconic product and a taste of Louisiana magic to this buzzing city.”

The much-loved American brand  – which boasts the Chicken Sandwich that broke the internet – is launching its third new restaurant of 2023 in Cardiff, with 13 existing restaurants and seven delivery kitchens across the UK. Popeyes® is on a mission for further expansion, with 20 new restaurants expected to open in 2023, including drive-thru – and potentially even more on the menu for Wales with Swansea to follow in the coming months.

Popeyes® Cardiff will open on 6-7 Saint John Street from 11am on Thursday 23rd March and will seat up to 86 people.
