Tŷ Hafan receives £10,000 carrier bag donation from The Range

Tŷ Hafan, the hospice for children in Wales, has received a generous donation of £10,000 from The Range after staff chose the children’s charity as one of the causes to benefit from its plastic bag levy fundraiser.

The large donation takes the retail giant’s total contribution over the past five years to £48,000 after donating the carrier bag charge to the Welsh hospice to help support life-limited children and their families across Wales.

Tŷ Hafan’s director of fundraising and retail, Julian Hall, explained:

“The donation from The Range is truly wonderful news at this difficult time. We’re facing significant fundraising challenges as a direct result of the pandemic, but the children and families in our care need our support more than ever to get through the Covid crisis.

“Thanks to generous donations like these, we’re able to continue providing expert care through the crisis and keep our hospice doors open to children and young people requiring urgent and end-of-life care, as well as run virtual care services for those shielding from the virus at home.”

The welcome news follows the launch of an urgent appeal after Tŷ Hafan announced it is facing a £2 million income loss this year due to the cancellation of its biggest fundraising events in the calendar and the Covid-related closure of all 26 shops across Wales.

Tŷ Hafan’s public appeal, ‘Caring through the Crisis’, was launched in April to urgently raise funds, but it is still not enough to make up the almost 50 percent loss this year.

CEO of The Range, Alex Simpkin, said:

“This year we have collectively donated over £190,000 to charities close to The Range’s heart, including Tŷ Hafan. It’s a privilege to be able to help this incredible charity through difficult times and we are proud to do so.”

Mr Hall added, “The carrier bag levy is such an easy way for retailers to support us. The Range’s five-year contribution has helped run Tŷ Hafan’s care for four whole days – it’s amazing how much the pennies add up.”
