UWTSD Men’s Football Team crowned BUCS Western Tier 6 League Champions

The University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) Men’s Football Team secured the Western Tier 6 British Universities and College Sport (BUCS) League Title recently with a resounding 9-0 win away against Gloucester University.

This capped off a season where the team has won every single league game, scoring 44 goals while only conceding 2 goals all season to deservedly win the title outright. Their recent success secures their promotion for next season to Tier 5 in the BUCS Men’s Football pyramid.

The players have showed a level of commitment to the team week in week out throughout the season. Their style of play has evolved throughout the season, and the last five games showed off their development as a team to score some fantastic performances.

Notable individual performances were Myles Perkins 13 league goals and Nico Sofiu’s 12 league goals, together contributing to over half the teams season total. A team built on discipline and defensive work rate, racking up six clean sheets was largely down to goal keepers Jake Stephens and Rhys Mansell, whilst central defenders Matthew Francis, Owain Davies and Luke McDonalds were calm and collected in defence but especially impressive in possession, often starting most of the successful attacks from their own half.

The team and coaching staff would like to thank Bryn Jones who has refereed all of the home fixtures, and they feel very fortunate to have him as part of the football setup here at the University given his very successful referee CV.

Martyn Bowles, Head of Football at UWTSD said:

“Whilst winning the league was our end goal, the most pleasing area of development was our playing style. The players have evolved to be able to react to many different scenarios and adapt to always find a way to win.

“I place a strong emphasis on development as being student athletes. I want to encourage the players to invest in the team, and learn like they would in their academic studies. Our standards have never dropped and that has culminated in us getting our first league title together.

“I’d like to place my thanks to Daniel Kivi, Assistant Coach; James Dillion, Goalkeeper Coach; Sports Therapists, Richard, Naomi and Ryan alongside the Student Union for all their support this season. The environment we have created is as professional as it can be, with the league title a measure of that success that we have got it right on and off the field. We look forward to next season in the new league and welcome staff and students to come and support the players in our home fixtures at Carmarthen Town AFC, you will not be disappointed!”

Lee Tregoning Head of UWTSD’s Academy of Sport added:

“Huge congratulations to the team, club committee, coaches, support staff and Student Union. The working relationship between the Club, the Student Union and the Academy has been excellent and the results both on and off the pitch has been hugely encouraging for the future.”
