Ysgol Gymraeg Bro Helyg in Blaina, Blaenau Gwent, has been recognised for its hard work in supporting Young Carers at the school, by achieving the Care Collective’s Young Carer ‘Best Practice’ Award.
The Young Carer Lead Practitioner at the school, Miss Carys Jones said:
“We are delighted that our work has been recognised, but more importantly, it’s good to know that our Young Carer Group all feel well supported by the school community.”
A large evidence file was presented to the panel, demonstrating the whole school’s commitment to supporting pupils as well as raising awareness of the issue.
Headteacher Ms Ann Toghill said:
“We are very proud of the work our Young Carers’ Group does to promote the issue within the school and we are so pleased that their efforts have been recognised by the awarding panel. My thanks go to Miss Jones and the Young Carers for leading the school so effectively on this – huge congratulations are in order!”
The Young Carers in Schools programme, highlighted by Welsh Government as good practice, is currently funded by the Gwent Regional Partnership Board, Cardiff & Vale University Health Board and Monmouthshire Council.
The Young Carers in Schools Programme aims to provide schools with the tools and resources to support young carers and reduce negative impacts, giving young carers the same access to education and future life chances as their peers.
