Local sporting heroes were recognised at the Sport Caerphilly Sport Awards 2025, held at Bryn Meadows on Friday 7th November. The annual celebration brought together clubs, volunteers and community leaders to honour those making an outstanding contribution to grassroots sport across the county borough.

Hosted by Sport Caerphilly, the event celebrated individuals and organisations whose dedication and passion continue to strengthen community sport and inspire participation at every level.

    This year’s winners were:

    • Aaron Ramsey Young Volunteer of the Year: Ioan Walters (Wattsville FC)
    • Welsh Sport Association Volunteer of the Year: Lee Couzens (Caerphilly Tennis Club)
    • Phylyp Butler Memorial Cup Inclusive Award: Julie Proctor (Dragonflies Trampoline Club)
    • Dragons RFC Community Coach of the Year: Michaela Pine (Caerphilly Junior Netball Club)
    • Langstone Safety & Workwear Club of the Year: Sue Noake Hockey Club
    • Caerphilly County Borough Council Lifetime Achievement to Sport: Alison Dacey (Ystrad Mynach Netball Club) and Karen Williams (Caerphilly Junior Netball Club)

Rugby legend Steve Fenwick was also inducted into the Team Caerphilly Sports Wall of Fame, recognising his outstanding contribution to Welsh rugby and his success as a former British and Irish Lions and Wales international. His achievements continue to inspire players and fans across the county borough.

Cllr Chris Morgan, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said:

“These awards shine a spotlight on the incredible people and clubs that make our communities stronger through sport. Their dedication, leadership and passion ensure that opportunities to be active are open to everyone across Caerphilly.”

The evening also featured an inspiring address from Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, one of Britain’s most successful Paralympians and a leading advocate for inclusion and equality in sport.

The awards form part of the ongoing commitment to promote physical activity and wellbeing through the Sport and Active Recreation Strategy 2019-2029, which supports participation and inclusion across the borough.
