South Wales Police is continuing the investigation into the death of a 40-year-old woman in the Talbot Green area on Sunday, March 9, 2025.

Officers were called on Sunday at 6.10pm with a report of a shooting in Llys Illtyd.

Officers and Welsh Ambulance Service paramedics attended the scene.

A 40-year-old woman was found suffering serious injuries – despite the efforts of the emergency services she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Although formal identification has yet to take place, South Wales Police believe the victim to be 40-year-old Joanne Penney.  Her next of kin has been informed and are being supported by specialist officers.

Police have asked that their privacy is respected at this difficult time.

The 42-year-old man from Talbot Green arrested on suspicion of murder remains in police custody.

Crime scenes remain in place as work continues to gather evidence following the shooting and inquiries into the circumstances continue.

Detective Chief Superintendent Ceri Hughes said: “I want to reassure the local community that a team of experienced detectives and specialist staff are continuing to work at pace to piece together the events of last night including recovering CCTV.

“I am appealing for anyone with dashcam footage from journeys in the Talbot Green area between 5.30pm and 6.30pm, on Sunday March 9, to submit it here :  https://mipp.police.uk/operation/62SWP25C03-PO1

“I understand that those living in Talbot Green will be concerned and residents will see an increased police presence in the area both as part of the investigation and to reassure the community.”
