Work is progressing well on the delivery of 44 new council homes and an integrated transport hub in Llandaff.
Located on the site of the former recycling centre on Waungron Road, work on site is progressing well with the groundworks well underway. The development is part of the Council’s Cardiff Living programme and is being delivered by the Council’s partners, national developer Wates Residential.
The site will provide 44 one and two-bed new council apartments, alongside office and commercial spaces, with a new access road designed to integrate a transport hub so that people can interchange between Waun-Gron Park Train Station and the new bus facility to travel to other destinations without having to travel into the city centre.
The new transport facility will be able to accommodate up to 40 bus movements per hour, providing access to buses travelling west to south, north to south, and west to east, and vice versa.
The new homes will be highly energy-efficient, incorporating renewable technologies such as ground source heat pumps and solar photovoltaic panels, exceeding current energy performance standards.
The homes will be allocated to people on the city’s housing waiting list, while a portion will be used as temporary supported accommodation, with on-site support staff, for people transitioning from homelessness to independent living.
The integration of the residential development with the transport interchange will deliver enhanced connectivity for the area, enabling a seamless interchange between train, bus, and active travel modes.
Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities, Cllr Lynda Thorne, said: “I’m pleased to see work now underway on our Waungron Road scheme. It’s one of several schemes currently on site that, together, will deliver nearly 600 new homes for Cardiff, and of course we have hundreds more in the pipeline as part of our ambitious plans to deliver 4,000 new homes for the city.
“This development represents a practical step forward in our efforts to expand Cardiff’s supply of affordable housing. By combining permanent and supported accommodation with integrated transport links, we’re delivering a scheme that meets a range of housing needs while improving access to services and opportunities across the city.”
Cabinet Member for Climate Change, Strategic Planning & Transport, Councillor Dan De’Ath, said: “The Council is committed to improving bus travel across the city to ensure that those who travel by bus can reach their destination more quickly and enjoy a better experience. Although the Council does not operate or manage commercial bus services, we are responsible for providing the infrastructure to improve bus routes. The new bus interchange on Waungron Road will enable people to travel to a variety of destinations without needing to go into the city centre first.”
Edward Rees, Wales Regional Managing Director, Wates Residential, said: “A thriving place isn’t defined by great homes alone. It’s shaped by how people connect – to each other, to opportunities, and to the wider city. At Waungron Road, we’re proud to be delivering affordable, energy-efficient homes alongside a transport hub that makes every day travel simpler and more sustainable. This is a development that truly creates a place for people to thrive.”
The scheme is expected to complete in autumn 2027.
