Work starts on new play area for Mayhill

Work is due to start this week on a new play area for Mayhill.

Residents and local children have been involved in designing the facility and choosing the equipment for Mayhill Park.

There include swings, a slide, a 25 metre cableway, a wheelchair-friendly roundabout and other fun items of equipment.

Contractors are due on site this week and, if the weather allows, are hopeful of completing the project by the time children break-up for the Christmas holidays.

Plans for upgrades and new play areas for communities around the city were unveiled in March this year and the Mayhill initiative is one of more than 60 play being revamped with nearly £4m being invested over the next 18 months.

Robert Francis Davies, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Investment, Regeneration and Tourism, said: “A Friends Group was set-up in Mayhill by the community and has been working with ward councillors and officers to deliver this project and I’m delighted it is getting underway.

“Every ward in Swansea will see a share of funding. So far more than 30 playgrounds in parks and communities across the city have already been upgraded or have plans in hand and the council recently announced even more funding so around another 30 will be improved in the coming months.”

Andrew Stevens, Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Business Improvement and Performance, said the play area initiative had already been a huge hit with youngsters.

“This is the largest investment in community play areas Swansea has ever seen and the feedback has been fantastic. It has been so rewarding to see the play areas that have been completed so far being so widely used.”
