Monmouthshire County Council will begin replacing the steps and footpath in Castle Dell, Chepstow, which connects Welsh Street to the Bank Street car park, on Monday, 17th March 2025.

The project will result in improved connectivity between Welsh Street car park and Chepstow Castle, a safer walking route with enhanced accessibility for wheelchairs, pushchairs, and mobility scooters.

The work is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete.

During this period, the steps and footpath will be closed and fenced off to ensure a safe working environment for workers and the public.

For safety reasons, the Castle Dell play area will be closed during construction. We encourage families to use the alternative play facilities available at the Danes play area, accessible from St. Kingsmark Avenue or Huntfield Road.

Additionally, the entrance through the town wall between Welsh Street car park and Castle Dell will be closed for three weeks starting from 17th March. We anticipate reopening this entrance on Monday, 7th April, depending on the progress of the work.

The replacement steps and footpath improvements in Castle Dell will be an important preliminary measure before replacing the outdated children’s play area with an exciting new destination play area for the town. This project is a partnership scheme between Chepstow Town Council, The Friends of Dell Park Chepstow and Monmouthshire County Council.

Monmouthshire County Council’s Deputy Leader & Cabinet Member for Planning and Economic Development, Cllr Paul Griffiths, said: “The work that will be carried out over the six weeks will improve the connectivity of Chepstow. This is a popular walking route for many residents. Although we understand the impact in the short term, the improvements will allow us to carry on with making further developments within the park. We thank you for your support and understanding throughout the next six weeks.”

The work on replacing the steps and improving the footpath is funded through the Welsh Government’s Transforming Towns Placemaking Grant Programme.
