Pantside Footbridge has been successfully reinstalled following a series of overnight works, though it will remain closed for several more weeks while final safety checks are carried out.

Caerphilly County Borough Council confirmed that the bridge was reinstalled in the early hours of Monday, March 9, following a phased programme of work carried out overnight across Friday, Saturday and Sunday.

The council said the installation was completed as planned, marking an important milestone in efforts to restore the structure after it was damaged in a bridge strike in 2019.

However, the footbridge will remain closed to the public for several weeks while essential safety checks, inspections and snagging works are completed. These include minor corrective tasks that must be signed off before the bridge can reopen.

The contractor and design consultants are now working together to complete these safety critical activities as quickly as possible to ensure the bridge can safely reopen.

Further work will also begin shortly around the bridge. This includes reinstating the stepped footway, replacing defective pedestrian barriers, carrying out masonry repairs and managing vegetation in the surrounding area.

Caerphilly Council said these additional works were not part of the original commission, as the defects identified were unrelated to the bridge strike damage and the associated insurance claim.

The council thanked residents for their patience during the prolonged disruption caused since the original bridge strike.

A spokesperson said reaching this stage represents a significant step forward in restoring the structure for community use, with a further update expected once the anticipated reopening date has been confirmed.
