£1.25m set aside for Swansea school’s 3G sports pitch

More than £1m has been set aside to pay for a new full-size all-weather 3G pitch at Olchfa School.

An update on the project that will transform sports facilities for pupils and the wider community has gone before Swansea Council’s Cabinet.

The council and school governors identified a parcel of land that was surplus to requirements and it was agreed that it would be sold to fund the new 3G pitch.

That land is now in the process of being bought by a developer and subject to the successful completion of the land sale, work can then start on the installation of the sports facilities.

Cabinet members have set aside £1.25m to cover all costs including new perimeter fencing.

In addition to the new 3G pitch the school will continue to have two traditional football and rugby fields.

Swansea Council’s Cabinet Member for Education & Learning, Robert Smith, said: “I’m eager to see work start as soon as possible on providing this much needed sports facility.

“The 3G pitch will ensure that the school’s sports teams can play and train all-year around and it will also provide a great asset for the wider community when not in use by the school.

“My cabinet colleagues have agreed that this significant investment is aside so we will be in a position to start work as soon as all the formalities with the land sale are completed.

“Swansea Council is committed to providing the very best facilities for our schools with new all-weather pitches at Penyrheol, Morriston, Pentrehafod and Dylan Thomas schools.”

Olchfa School Headteacher Hugh Davies said: “We are looking forward to work commencing on the new full-sized 3G pitch that will improve the sports facilities for all our pupils and the local community.”
