The East Rhyl Coastal Defence Scheme will protect 1,650 properties in East Rhyl and will be funded through the Welsh Government, as well as part funding by Denbighshire County Council.
Preparatory work on the two year project will start onsite on April 16 with the main contractor Balfour Beatty putting in a range of additional measures to ensure it can adhere to the latest UK guidelines around Covid 19, ensuring there will be no impact on public safety.
The proposed scheme involves the placement of 128,000 tonnes of rock armour in front of the existing sea defences at East Rhyl, as well as 600 metres of new sea defence wall and promenade.
Cllr Brian Jones, the Council’s Lead Member for Waste, Transport and the Environment, said: “The 2013 floods affected hundreds of residents in the area and this scheme will significantly reduce the risk of flooding to homes and businesses and offer some peace of mind to those residents.
“These defences will also help protect the area from the impact of climate change which could see sea levels rise and an increased frequency of storms.
“We are aware there may be some sensitivity about construction schemes proceeding at this time, and we have discussed whether it is right to start this scheme now. However, this project will protect property and lives. Delaying the project could add an additional period of winter working, which would extend the amount of time those communities remain vulnerable, putting many homes at risk of further flooding.
“Therefore, on reflection, we believe it is right to proceed with the project, and it has been agreed the work will commence as planned.”
