600 Sony engineers take part in mass drumming event at Swansea Uni

Hundreds of Sony UK Technology Centre staff have swapped the factory for the orchestra for a “one of a kind” musical event at Swansea University.

Over 600 staff from the Pencoed-based manufacturing facility came together at the university’s bay campus to make a musical masterpiece as part of their annual team building day.

The Beatswork workshop, run by team building specialists Orangeworks, saw all members of Sony UK TEC’s manufacturing operation challenged to learn a different percussion-based instrument during the day.

After an inspirational talk by guest speaker Georgina Jones of Turn Lights On, the Sony UK TEC team was separated into groups to rehearse the individual musical sections and master the various instruments ahead of a final performance.

The day then culminated in a “lively and exciting” Samba performance encompassing all 600 staff in the university’s main auditorium.

Gerald Kelly, Director of Professional Services at Sony UK TEC said it was a “fantastic” event which thoroughly tested the teams’ collaboration skills outside of a manufacturing environment.

He said:

“Our annual team building events have become a hugely popular and successful fixture in our calendar, and this year has been no exception.

“Our staff worked together to bring a one of a kind performance to the stage which was both lively and exciting and thoroughly enjoyed by all.

“Most importantly it really put their communication, collaboration, and team skills to the test, which was our goal and will hopefully translate into the world-class work they do within our manufacturing facility.

“We’d like to thank Swansea University and Orangeworks for all their helps in hosting and organising this fantastic event.”
