Lewis School Pengam and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni have both received brand new 3G – multiuse sporting pitches as a part of a series of pitch updates recently completed across the county borough.
Both of the pitches have been converted from the previous Artificial Turf Pitches (ATP) to the new 3G style pitches that are more user friendly and will provide key strategic facilities for the surrounding communities in each of the areas. The two new 3G pitches join the recently opened facility at St. Cenydd Community School and complete a series of projects to update key facilities for the county borough.
Caerphilly Council contributed £185K from the retained underspend reserve to upgrade the current ATP to 3G facilities.
Tony Lelliott, a representative from Machrie, the private funded initiative company involved in this project commented:
“Providing both pitches was a result of collaboration and long term Investment between the PFI partners and the Authority. It is hoped the facilities will provide the schools, clubs and wider community the benefit of playing both Rugby and Football all year round for many years to come”.
Cllr Ross Whiting, the Cabinet Member for Learning and Achievement commented:
“The upgraded 3G pitches at Lewis School Pengam and Ysgol Gyfun Cwm Rhymni, alongside the recently opened pitch at St. Cenydd Community School and leisure centre – will provide key strategic facilities for pupils and the wider community to utilise in the coming years.”
“The new pitches add to Caerphilly’s County Borough Council’s vast portfolio of excellent facilities and will provide more opportunities for Caerphilly’s residents and pupils at the schools to engage in sport from an early age. My thanks go out to all of those who worked hard to make this happen.”
The new facilities will provide local sports clubs with the opportunity to play and train all year around. The multi-use pitches can be used in all weather and are utilised by a number of different sports including football and rugby.
