Caerphilly County Borough Council’s Cabinet met yesterday (Wednesday 25th November) to set out its vision for a green Caerphilly.
Cabinet members agreed a Green Infrastructure Strategy which aims to build on the significant work already carried out by the Council to develop Caerphilly into a green and healthy place to live with an established, multi-functional green infrastructure of high quality spaces; interlinked by a network of corridors that benefit both people and nature.
In 2019 the Council became only the second in Gwent to declare a climate emergency and commit to becoming carbon neutral by 2030. As part of these efforts, a Decarbonisation Strategy has also been adopted, which will enhance the Council’s work in reducing carbon emissions and investing in efficiency measures across its portfolio. ‘Reduce, Produce, Offset, Buy’ aims to tackle the climate emergency by reducing the amount of carbon going into the atmosphere, as well as creating financial and social benefits, through reducing energy bills for the Council and its tenants.
The Council has also signed up to the Gwent Healthy Travel Charter; developed by the Gwent Sustainable Travel Group and led by Aneurin Bevan Health Board. Public sector bodies across Gwent have worked in collaboration to develop the commitments included in the Charter, which cover communication and leadership, agile working, ultra-low emission vehicles, walking, cycling and public transport.
Cllr Sean Morgan, the Council’s Deputy Leader, said “As a Council we are continuously seeking ways to increase sustainability and protect the environment for future generations. Today’s Cabinet meeting gave a clear commitment to tackling climate change and in driving forward the Council’s green agenda.”
