Merthyr Tydfil town centre shops and businesses will also be receiving a shot in the arm this spring and early summer, courtesy of free weekend parking for customers.

The County Borough Council and Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil Business Improvement District (BID) are encouraging shoppers to take advantage of free parking at all town centre car parks every Friday, Saturday and Sunday for the whole of May and June 2021.

“After discussions with the BID, we agreed that Fridays to Sundays are the busiest days in the town centre, footfall-wise,” said the Council’s Head of Regeneration and Housing Chris Long.

“Now that non-essential retailers have been allowed to re-open, we want to use this as an incentive to get our residents back shopping local and having the time to relax and enjoy our extensive and diverse range of independent shops and markets.

“With outdoor dining and drinking due to be allowed again from the end of April and indoor hospitality being considered from May 31, we’re hoping that our cafés, pubs and restaurants will also benefit.”

Elizabeth Bedford, BID Co-ordinator for the Big Heart of Merthyr said: “Free parking makes a huge difference to people visiting our bustling town centre.

“It means they can relax while they shop, have a meal or a coffee and know they are not on the clock.

“The Big Heart of Merthyr and Merthyr Council are doing all they can to get locals and visitors back into the town centre and free parking will help boost the local economy just when we need it.”
