The University of Wales Trinity Saint David’s School of Engineering is looking forward to hosting a range of activities at British Speedway Grand Prix 2018 in Cardiff this year.

The main event hosted by the School of Engineering will be called ‘The Science of Speed’ which will be hosted in the fanzone. Participants will be able to take an in-depth look at the maths and science of motorcycle dynamics using Road-Race and Speedway machinery whilst getting up-close to a working bike from the track.

Professor Michael Fernando is the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture, Computing, and Engineering. He said:

“The Faculty is extremely proud to present “The Science of Speed” event in the Speedway Grand Prix of Britain’s fanzone. We develop engineers who work with cutting edge technology in the motorsport industry. It is an excellent opportunity for our budding engineers to interact with the speedway community, mutual sharing of knowledge and be an inspiration for the next generation motorsport engineers.”

Roger Dowden, Director of Motorsport at UWTSD, said:

“This is the first time we have taken a stand at the Fanzone so we are really looking forward to it. We will have experts on hand to demonstrate the technology and science behind the extreme performance of racing motorcycles – comparing the widely different requirements of speedway and circuit racing motorcycles. With fully built machines and the major components that go to make them up on the stand, visitors will be able to get a real insight into this fascinating subject”

Roger’s message to the fans is: “Do come and talk to us in the Speedway GP Fanzone and find out about the Science of Speed. Everyone is welcome”

The 20-minute sessions will have one bike of each type on display. The presenter for the session will analyse and explain the differences, using on-board video and data logging to supplement the presentation, which will include the technical aspects of powertrain, cornering, data acquisition, and transmission.

The Speedway Grand Prix of Britain is an annual Speedway event that has been held in Cardiff’s Principality Stadium since 2001. It welcomes riders from all over the world to the city to compete in this prestigious event as part of the Speedway Grand Prix series.

UWTSD’s School of Engineering is part of the university’s Faculty of Architecture, Computing and Engineering, a multidisciplinary, STEM-based faculty based in Swansea that covers architecture, automotive, motorcycle and motorsport engineering, construction, computing, electronics, environmental management, logistics, mechanical and manufacturing engineering.
